1] Erythrocyte

• male: 5.2 x 10⁶ /mm³
• female: 4.7 x 10⁶ /mm³
• mean diameter: 8 microns
• Hct 40-45 %
• outnumber leukocytes 800:1
• male: 16 gms haemoglobin per 100 ml whole blood
• female: 14 gms haemoglobin per 100 ml whole blood
• 1 gm Hb combines with 1.4 mls O₂ -> 21 ml O₂ per 100 ml blood (male)
• strictly not a cell but a copuscle as no nucleus therefore limited life of approx 120 days

2] Leukocyte

• 4000-11000/mm³

GRANULOCYTES

Neutrophile	3000-7000mm^3	40-70% of leukocytes	phagocytize bacteria
Eosinophile	100-400/mm^3	1-4%	kill parasitic worms destroy An-Ab complexes
Basophile	20-50/mm^3	<1%	release histamine

AGRANULOCYTES

Lymphocyte	1500-3000/mm^3	20-45%	immunity: direct or via Ab
Monocyte	100-700/mm^3	4-8%	phagocytosis: develop into macrophages in tissues

3] Thrombocyte (Platelet)

• ¹/_4-¹/₂ x 10⁶ /mm³; [250,000 - 500,000 /mm³]
• because they have no nucleus, they age quickly and degenerate within 10 days
