“Phytomenadione” [Konakion]

Actions:

• Vitamin K is utilised by the liver for the synthesis of:

Prothrombin (II), Proconvertin (VII), Christmas factor (IX) & Stuart factor (X)

Indication:

• Antidote to anticoagulant coumarin

• Vit K deficiencies

Pharmacokinetics

• Require up to 2 hours [after IV injection] to promote prothrombin synthesis

• Whole blood or component therapy may be required if bleeding is severe

Administration

• Administer slowly IV {anaphylaxis danger]

• IV injection must be reserved for severe haemorrhage due to overdosage of coumarins

• Preferably given orally
