ENFLURANE

“ETHRANE”

1) Action

     General anaesthetic

2) Mechanism

3) Indications

Induction & maintenance of general anaesthesia

4) Effects on organs—side effects

Decreases MAP in direct proportion to alveolar concentration due to reduction in CO, minimal effect on SVR

     May increase heart rate

     Very depressant on myocardium

     Decreases metabolic rate of brain

     Increases cerebral blood flow

     Secretions may be increased

5) Toxic effects/ precautions with administration

     May be associated with hyperglycaemia

6) Contraindications

     Hepatic necrosis

7) Reversal, antagonism or antidote

Reversal by ventilation with pure oxygen

8) Loading dose, maintenance dose, frequency & method of administration

For induction: start at 0.5% at increase by increments of 5% until  surgical anaesthesia achieved

     Maintenance at 0.5-2%

Recovery: reduce to 0.5% near end of surgical procedure

9) Drug’s metabolism—Drug’s excretion—Half life (pharmacokinetics)

     MAC (minimum alveolar concentration): 1.68
